Description

Maria-Teresa de Filippis (1926-2016) in the Maserati before the 1958 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

GRAND PRIX PHOTO

Today Grand Prix Photo is one of the biggest collections of Formula 1 photos in the world.
The man behind the collections is Peter Nygaard, who founded Grand Prix Photo in 1982. He had just graduated from law school (University of Copenhagen) when he decided to try to make a living out of motor racing photography. Today, he can look back at 33 Formula 1 seasons and more than 500 Grands Prix.
Peter Nygaard has over the years purchased photos or entire collections from retired colleagues like Nigel Snowdon, Dominique Leroy and Giancarlo Ceveninini.
”It is the history that makes Formula 1 unique,” Peter Nygaard says. ”Other series may have faster cars or – occasionally! – more interesting racing, but only Formula 1 has 65 years of history. It is fascinating that the stars of today follow in the wheel tracks of the legends from yester-year. That Lewis Hamilton wins the same championship that Juan-Manuel Fangio won in the 1950s. That Sebastian Vettel with four titles can be compared with the sport´s other quadruple world champion Alain Prost. That Fernando Alonso races at some of the same circuits as Jim Clark did in the 1960s.”
