An early version of this picture, signed by Edward Curtiss and framed in an original Curtiss Studio frame, was sold at Christie’s in New York for $11,250 in 2009.
Edward Sheriff Curtiss (16.2.1868-19.10.1952) was an American photographer and ethnographer, who portrayed the Indians and their country from the year 1900, and thirty years to come. Edward Curtiss, or Shadow Hunter, as some of the tribes called him, took in this period over 40,000 images of countless native from Eskimos in the North to the Hopi Indians in the Southwest.
